When you choose a print size for a piece of artwork, the image is almost never simply stretched or squashed. Instead, the system crops the original composition to fit the aspect ratio of your selected size. Understanding this process helps you avoid surprises and order a print that looks exactly as you intend.
Aspect ratio in plain language
Every image has a relationship between its width and its height. This is its aspect ratio, expressed as two numbers: width first, then height. A square image has a ratio of 1:1; a classic 4×6-inch print has a ratio of 2:3; an A4 sheet is roughly 1:1.414. When you choose a print size, you are also choosing a fixed aspect ratio. If the original artwork has a different ratio, the image must be cropped to match.
Original versus Print crop versus In a room
Wallpapers.art provides three views in the product preview:
- Original – Shows the uncropped source composition as the artist or contributor intended. This is the full frame before any size-specific cropping is applied.
- Print crop – Represents the image after it has been cropped to the aspect ratio of your chosen print size. What you see here is what will be printed, subject to the locked-ratio adjustment described below.
- In a room – A contextual view that places the artwork in a representative room setting. This view uses the same cropped image as the Print crop view, but is intended to help you judge scale and proportion against furniture and wall space. It cannot reproduce exact physical colour.
How automatic cropping works
When you select a print size, the system automatically crops the original image to the required aspect ratio. The crop is centred by default, meaning it removes equal amounts from the left and right (for a wider original) or from the top and bottom (for a taller original). This automatic crop is a sensible starting point, but it may not always preserve the most important part of the composition.
Locked-ratio customer adjustment
You are not stuck with the automatic crop. Wallpapers.art allows you to adjust the crop while the required aspect ratio remains locked. This means you can shift the crop area up, down, left or right, but you cannot change the width-to-height proportion. The locked ratio ensures that the image will fill the print size without stretching or distortion. Any adjustment you make is saved into your cart and carried through to your order.
What to check before you buy
Before you add a print to your cart, review the Print crop view carefully. Pay particular attention to:
- Faces and figures – Ensure no one’s head or body is awkwardly cut off at the edge of the frame.
- Signatures and text – If the artwork includes a signature, date or other text near the edge, confirm it remains fully visible or acceptably cropped.
- Focal subjects – The main subject of the image should be well placed within the cropped area. A centred composition in the original may shift off-centre after cropping to a different ratio.
If you are unsure, compare the Original view with the Print crop view. The difference between the two is the amount of image that will be lost.
Print sizes and aspect ratios
The following table shows common print sizes and their aspect ratios. Your chosen size will always lock you into its corresponding ratio.
| Print size | Aspect ratio |
|---|---|
| 5×7 inches | 5:7 |
| 8×10 inches | 4:5 |
| 11×14 inches | 11:14 |
| 16×20 inches | 4:5 |
| 18×24 inches | 3:4 |
| 24×36 inches | 2:3 |
If your original artwork has a ratio that does not match any of these, cropping is unavoidable. Choose the size whose ratio best preserves the composition you want.
What is saved into cart and order
Once you have adjusted the crop to your satisfaction, that crop position is saved with the product in your cart. When you place the order, the saved crop is used to generate the print file. This means you do not need to re-adjust the crop at checkout. However, if you change the print size after adjusting the crop, the system will apply a new automatic crop for the new size, and any previous adjustment will be lost. Always confirm the Print crop view after changing sizes.
Colour and material considerations
Digital previews on screens emit light; prints reflect light. The Print crop view cannot reproduce exact physical colour, and the final appearance of your print will also depend on the material you choose (fine art print, framed print or canvas) and the lighting conditions in your room. Treat the preview as a guide to composition, not a colour proof.
Preserving your print
Once your print arrives, handle it with care. Avoid touching the image surface; hold the print by its edges. Keep it out of direct sunlight and away from sources of high humidity. Unstable humidity and prolonged light exposure can cause fading and chemical deterioration over time. A stable environment with moderate light levels will help your print last.
Hanging your print
A common starting point for hanging artwork is to place the visual centre of the piece approximately 57–60 inches (145–152 cm) from the floor. This is a guideline, not a rule. Adjust the height based on your furniture, the viewing position (seated vs standing) and the proportions of the room. The goal is a natural viewing angle that feels comfortable in your space.
